A Bitter Pill: Patient Adherence Explained
Treatment advice must be followed properly to work properly. Unfortunately, a considerable number of patients, either because they do not understand their prescription or because they disagree with it, fail to adhere to (follow) the instructions given them by their physician; the result is almost always treatment that is less effective than it might otherwise be. In this article, we’ll take a look at the phenomenon doctors call “patient nonadherence,” and review some of the ways that you can improve your own adherence and, in so doing, your own health.
